Schools and kindergartens

Children and young people spend most of their waking hours in school, making them unique places to teach democratic participation.

Want to give children and young people a voice in everyday decisions in your school or kindergarten?

You can

  • Teach children about their rights, including their right to express their opinion and be heard, and empower them to plan and lead activities.

  • Invite kindergarten children to participate in a variety of decisions, ranging from defining activities and outings, setting the menu, problem solving, and even recruitment of staff.

  • Establish class and school councils to ensure that the interests of students are reflected in decisions by the school board and management as well as to organise activities and events.

  • Provide teachers with a thorough understanding of child rights through training and other capacity-building.

  • Strengthen child safeguarding in your work with students.

“Students should not only be trained to live in a democracy when they grow up; they should have the chance to live in one today.”

— Alfie Kohn
